Putting ice on injured tissue is needed within minutes of injury or when the area is slightly reinjured. The basis for using ice on the injury should be seen from the functional standpoint (what it is doing on the cellular level!). The inflammation that occurs is a good thing, meaing the injured tissue is being recycled, removed, and then replaced hopefully with functional tissue.
